We've also had additional video games and yet another new animated series that started in 2012 and is about to wrap up its second season. The feature film series spanned three entries from 1990-1993 and we got a stand-alone animated feature film, TMNT, which opened to $25 million in 2007. That's not counting the one season live-action Power Rangers knock-off that aired from 1997 to 1998. Another animated series took its place in 2003 on the Cartoon Network and ran for 156 episodes until 2009. The original cartoon ran for 200 episodes until going off the air in 1996. Say what you will about revamping older properties for the sake of nostalgia, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been a relatively consistent presence since their creation as a satirical comic book in 1984.
The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is not necessarily for you. I say this only because I can't help but be amused by the copious online whining we've seen over the last year from adult men of varying ages regarding the rumored altered origins, the somewhat grotesque new designs, and the notion that producer Michael Bay (along with director Jonathan Liebesman) are going to ruin a beloved 80's property in the same way he "ruined" the Transformers to the tune of around $890 million worldwide per picture. There is no law saying that I have to be obsessively nostalgic about every kid-centric property I was into back when I was actually a kid. Aside from the fact that I still think the original film is a pretty terrific comic book adaptation and I still hold the arcade games in very high esteem, I haven't been "into" this franchise is well-over twenty years. As a kid, I adored the 80's/90's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, bought the action figures, tossed countless quarters in the Konami arcade game, and was in theaters on opening weekend for the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature 24 years ago (which opened with $25 million back when that was among the 6 or 7 biggest debuts ever). We have the one liners we all associate with TMNT, but the visual style doesn't fit.Īgain, I'm willing to give them a chance, but this has not been a good first impression.As for the film, I am not the target audience.

We're okay with half-turtle/half-human bodies. They went from more to less serious depending on the tone of any particular series, but the general design was the same.Īnd now. The other live action movies also fall in line with the over all character design. This image in particular shows the consistency of the turtles. Let's take a look at Turtles in Time (if you'll excuse the reference.) I'm totally fine with CGI turtles, in fact.
